Cookie & tracking intelligence

See what the web's
biggest sites actually store

DataMetrics analyses the cookies real websites set in your browser, classifies them by purpose, and scores each domain's tracking intensity — so the numbers behind a cookie banner are something you can look at rather than accept.

What the dataset gives you

Every domain is broken down the same way, so two sites in different industries can be compared on the same terms.

Cookies by purpose

Each domain's cookies are split into strictly necessary, performance, functionality and targeting — plus anything that could not be classified, counted honestly as unknown.

A tracking level

High, Medium or Low, derived from how much of a site's cookie load is targeting-related and how long those cookies persist — not from the raw count alone.

Session vs persistent

The split between cookies that disappear when you close the tab and those that follow you back, which is usually the more revealing of the two numbers.

Filter and compare

Narrow by category, domain or tracking level. Every chart, counter and table row on the dashboard responds to the same filter set.

Exportable rows

Any domain's full breakdown can be opened in detail and downloaded as CSV, so the figures can be checked outside this site.

Linked to the source

Each record carries the date it was last analysed and a link to that company's own privacy policy, so you can read their account of it too.

How a domain gets scored

The same four steps run for every site in the set.

01

Load the site and record what it sets

A domain is visited and every cookie written to the browser is captured, including those set by third parties the page pulls in.

02

Classify each cookie by purpose

Cookies are matched against known identifiers and the site's own declarations. Anything that matches nothing stays in the unknown bucket rather than being guessed into a category.

03

Weigh the mix, not the total

A tracking level comes from the proportion of targeting cookies and how long they live. A site with many functional cookies and no targeting ones scores Low despite a high total.

04

Publish the whole breakdown

The per-category counts are published alongside the score, so the score can be disagreed with on the evidence rather than taken on trust.
